During World Book Day week we have a host of awesome authors who we’re delighted to be supporting in their visits to Goodrich 📚 First up is Suzanne Hemming, who’ll be meeting our Year 1s on Monday to talk about ‘The Queen Engineer.’
As a mum to her daughter, Suzanne became increasingly fed up of books about pink princesses who waited for the prince to whisk them away. She searched for and (with the exception of a few amazing authors) found few inspiring and empowering books for girls – so started to publish her own, including ‘She’s Not Good for a Girl She’s Just Good!’w
On Tuesday it’s Lucy Reynolds, who along with illustrator Jenna Herman, combine their backgrounds in poetry and fine art to create lovely books for little explorers as Doodles and Scribbles.
Following on from the successful ‘Parrots Don’t Live in the City!’ Lucy will be meeting Reception and Nursery children for a fun workshop on her second book ‘Hedgehogs Don’t Live in the City!’ She hopes to inspire the next generation to be nature lovers who’ll help protect precious animal species (including prickly friends …)
On Wednesday it’s the turn of our Year 2s, who’ll be treated to some tips on writing and drawing with Emer Stamp author of best-seller ‘The Unbelievable Top Secret Diary of Pig’ and three follow up books.
A former graphic designer and advertising creative director, Emer has a great website featuring free downloadable worksheets and Q&A section for children.
On World Book Day itself (Thursday) Whitbread/Costa multi-award-winning children’s author Geraldine McCaughrean will share some of the fun and tricks of writing with our Year 5s and 6s!
Geraldine’s written more than 170 books published in 61 countries and translated into more than 45 languages. She wrote the official sequel ‘Peter Pan in Scarlet’ as well ‘Where the World Ends’ which won the 2018 CILIP, Carnegie and Kate Greenaway awards. Her work includes novels, tales of myths and legends, picture books and re-tellings of classics.w
Last but not least, on Friday our Year 3s and 4s will get to meet author Rob Lloyd Jones who’ll take them on a fascinating journey with tales of how he started writing and an interactive treasure hunt activity, inspired by his latest book, ‘Jake Atlas and the Hunt for the Feathered God’.
Former historian Rob is the author of the Victorian-inspired ‘Wild Boy’ books as well as the ‘Jake Atlas’ series which draws on the ancient world for inspiration. Plus he’s written more than 80 Usborne picture and non-fiction books including the ‘Look Inside’ and ‘See Inside’ collections, which (as he says) involve a *lot* of flaps…
We’re so lucky to have such an amazing group of authors visiting our school and encouraging the children’s love of reading. We can’t wait! And a HUGE thank you to Marcela Ferreira for all her hard work in arranging such a brilliant week of activities.
