March 5th is World Book Day
There will be author visits, workshops, quizzes, book vouchers to be won, cake sale, second-hand books and a pop-up stall from Dulwich Books! And don’t forget to return your book order form (and payment) to the office by Feb 26th. Haven’t got one? Just ask the office for a copy!
This is what you need to know…
Author visits
On Tuesday 3rd & Wednesday 4th, Mary Richards will be talking to Years 3 & 4 covering the art of writing journals, looking at things curiously and exploring their surroundings (their classroom, teachers, friends). Her latest book Take me to School is packed with activities prompting readers to write down their thoughts, consider their surroundings and find facts about schools across the globe, past and present.
On Thursday 5th – World Book Day itself – we will see the arrival of two authors: Claire Alexander and Matt Carr. Claire will be running an interactive drawing session and creating a story (Y1) and helping Y2 create their very own characters with expressions! Matt will be reading his brand-new book Rhinocorn Rules to Reception and Nursery and sharing some Rhino facts too.
On Friday 6th we will end the week’s festivities on a high with a visit from Steve Tasane – performance poet featured at Glastonbury Festival, the 100 Club, Latitude and the writer-in-residence for the Dickens Bicentennial Celebrations and Battersea Dogs Home. Steve will be talking to Y6 about his book Child I about the lives of children in a refugee camp, and running a poetry workshop (rhythm games, raps and call and response poems) with Y5.
Don’t forget that you have a chance to buy a signed copy of each author’s book – just watch out for your pre-order form in book bags.
Quiz
Want a chance to win a book voucher? Then have a go at our Quiz, designed to get the kids thinking about the authors who will be visiting them. It’s short and sweet and should help maximise their experience! We will be picking a winner for each year – that means 8 lucky children will receive a book voucher to be redeemed at Dulwich Books! Just make sure they are handed to the office by Friday 28th Feb.
The £1 World Book Day books
Before you head home, don’t forget that your child can redeem their £1 WBD voucher at the school. There will be limited numbers available, but don’t worry if you miss out. Bookstores will have plenty of WBD books in stock where they can also redeem their voucher.
Cake!
Our cake stand is a win-win. The kids get to buy a treat and raise money for FoG (which gets invested right back into the school). For WBD, we have asked the fabulous Dani – a Goodrich parent who runs the afterschool cooking class Family Feasts – to share a yummy recipe with us. We always need cake donations so why not have a go at our very own World Book Day Recipe?
Dulwich Books pop up stand
This year, Dulwich Books are back with a pop-up stand complete with hand-picked children’s titles for us! And don’t forget that if your child doesn’t fancy any of the WBD books on offer, you can still use it to get £1 off any book from the pop-up stand – cash or card accepted.

Dressing up
Some of the fun around World Book Day is the dressing up. Children can swap their uniforms for the day and come to school as any character from a children’s book. Need inspiration? There are plenty of ideas here: www.worldbookday.com
New Books for Class
Last but not least FoG will also be gifting mini book bundles to all classrooms at Goodrich. This would not have been possible without the support of parents like Grace Glendinning or Shelley John and anybody that has bought disco tickets, fair tokens, run a fun run, cycled for the school or just simply bought a cake at our stand.
